Hiking in the Azores

Voilà : vous avez là (presque) toutes les composantes des Açores :
- des montagnes fleuries de haies d'hortensias,
- la vue sur le plus haut sommet du Portugal (nommé Pico, en toute simplicité...)
- et le cri nocturne du cagarro (le puffin cendré) : un peu inquiétant, non ?
Ce qui manque à cette image ? La gentillesse et l'hospitalité des açorien(ne)s... La photo ne peut leur rendre crédit...
You have here (almost) all the components of the Azores :
- hydrangeas (hortensias) hedges criss-crossing the mountains
- view on the highest peak in Portugal (very simply called "Pico")
- and the night cry of the cagarro : a bit frightening, don't you think ?
What is missing :
the kindness and hospitality of the azorians... No way to show it on a picture...

Fajã Grande, de l'autre côté de l'île de Flores. Le restaurant unique de la ville (excellent, d'ailleurs!) prête son champ aux campeurs : on ne peut guère dormir ailleurs (sinon à la belle étoile, ce que nous ferons avec délice, au bord de la mer !) Fajã Grande, on the other side of the island. The only restaurant in the city (excellent, by the way !) lends a field to whoever wants to camp : there are not many other possibilities (unless you want to sleep in the open - which we did, with delight, on the sea shore !) |
D'impressionnantes cascades raient la face de l'énorme falaise qui domine la petite ville.
La cascade de Poça do Bacalhau est à quelques minutes du camping.

The Poça do Bacalhau is only a few minutes away from the campground.
Rodant presque en permanence sur les hauteurs, les nuages abreuvent les hortensias : une merveille !
Floating almost permanently on the heigths, the clouds water the hydrangeas : a delight !
Après avoir serpenté entre les lacs mystérieux du plateau, le sentier PR3FLO dévale la falaise abrupte par un escalier de pierres...
After winding around the mysterious lakes on top of the plateau, the PR3FLO trail rushes down the steep cliff on a stone stairway...

La traversée en catamaran de Horta (île de Faial) à Velas (sur île de São Jorge) offre une vue imprenable sur le fameux volcan Pico.
The catamaran crossing from Horta (in the island of Faial), to Velas (island of São Jorge) offers a great view of the famous Pico volcano.

La plage arrière du bateau est un emplacement de choix pour profiter de la vue et de la fraicheur. |

Depuis le Nord de l'île, presque toute son étendue se dévoile.
The North of the island lets us embrace most of its extend.
Pour ensuite admirer le soleil couchant...
And spend time watching the sunset...

C'est de Horta, dans l'île de Faial, que nous reprenons l'avion pour Lisbonne.
Nous en profitons pour visiter cette île, encore différente.
We fly back to Lisbon from Horta, in the island of Faial.
And we take the opportunity to visit the island, different from the other two.
La ville de Horta est une vraie capitale ! Etape favorite des navigateurs traversant l'Atlantique, elle est beaucoup plus animée que Flores et São Jorge. The city of Horta is a true capital city ! Sailors crossing the Atlantic frequently stop here, and the island is much busier than Flores and São Jorge. |

Nous allons évidemment visiter la Caldeira, dont nous faisons partiellement le tour, descendant ensuite sur Capelinho : encore une superbe balade !
Visiting the Caldeira is a must. We use the PRC4FAI trail around part of it, then walk down to Capelinho : a splendid walk !
